This site is to be a location where collaborative information can be shared, discussed and updated, for the benefit of a wide variety of persons whose lives intersect in some way with the world of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

It is intended that the information provided be of practical application, positive in nature, and focused on improving the quality of life in some way, for ALL PERSONS involved in this effort, but in a special way for families.

New School year welcome!

Whether one week or two already, it is STILL a new year of adjustments for EVERYONE...not just the students!  So....think about the calm and order that will become the 'norm' in 6-10 weeks (depends on the age of your student and the size of the transition that may be underway).

In the meantime, I am posting today about a new READING PROGRAM (published by Future Horzions) that appears to be positive and practical for ASD students of MANY age and ability levels:

Autism & Reading Comprehension:  Ready-to-use Lessons for Teachers, by Joseph Porter, M.Ed (2011).   In addition to a nearly 400 page, WONDERFULLY detailed but adaptively flexible text, there is a CD of printable plans, worksheets, visual tools, assessment forms, etc.

Of course, it does say 'teachers' in the title...AND, we DO KNOW that parents are the 1st teachers of their children...and that WORKING TOGETHER with your child's teacher really does get the best results, so I know the parent visitors to this site will use this information wisely!  For my own classroom/program, it is being "strongly encouraged", and I eagerly look forward to using it beginning in early October.   I will keep you updated on it quarterly throughout this school year.
